Sony VAIO Z-Series Hands-on Review

The Sony VAIO Z-series is Sony’s top-of-the-range model, and features the most powerful and impressive specification we’ve ever seen in a laptop of this size. We managed to spend some time with the Sony VAIO Z-series, and on first impressions we’re really impressed. Read on to find out more about the Sony VAIO Z-series.
For a start, the screen on the Sony VAIO Z-series is excellent. It’s relatively compact, at just 13.1 inches, so you’ll be able to take it with you wherever you go, yet features the highest resolution we’ve seen so far on a screen this small. At 1920 x 1080 pixels, icons look very small, but the trade off is pin-sharp images and the ability to play back movies in full high-definition.
The keyboard features Sony’s now traditional isolated style, but for the first time on a Sony laptop it’s a backlit unit on the Sony VAIO Z-series, with the keys lighting up gently automatically in darker conditions. It adds a sense of quality and additional usability to an already excellent keyboard.
The quality that runs throughout this machine is second-to-none, with carbon fibre adding a premium feel and also helping to keep the weight down to around 1.5kg. It’s easily small and light enough for daily travel, yet also feels relatively tough to the touch.
It’s the specs inside the Sony VAIO Z-series that really impress, however, with the range-topping Sony VAIO Z11X9E getting a unique storage setup, with four Solid State Drives (SSD) in place, offering incredibly quick access times to your files.
With a range-topping Intel Core i7 processor and up to 6GB of memory, it gives the Sony VAIO Z-series enough performance to rival machines that are nearly double the size, and if you can afford the high price tag you’ll no longer have to choose between performance or portability.
We haven’t had the chance to put the Sony VAIO Z-series through its paces fully yet, but we’ll hopefully be getting a review unit within the next two weeks. If first impressions are anything to go by, however, this is a very impressive, if overly luxurious, laptop.
